Four people have fallen into a gaping hole measuring an area of nearly 21.5 sq ft.

Four people have been confirmed dead after falling into a massive sinkhole in south-west China.

The gaping hole, measuring an initial area of nearly two square metres (21.5 square feet), appeared after the tiled pavement collapsed outside a local hospital in Dazhou city, Sichuan province at 2:30pm local time on Sunday, swallowing the four victims.

Rescuers pulled the first two victims, a newlywed couple, from the pit on Monday and found the remaining victims, a father and son, on Tuesday afternoon local time.

The couple just got married a couple days ago on October 3, according to The Paper citing the devastated father of the 23-year-old woman named Xiaoqing.

They were reportedly heading towards the train station from a supermarket when the pavement below them suddenly collapsed.

Rescuers first pulled Xiaoqing out of the hole just after midnight on Monday, but she was pronounced dead at hospital, according to CCTV. The body of her husband, Xiaolong, was found at about 9:36am.

The father and son, surnamed Tang, were found on Tuesday at about 3:50pm local time.

Their bodies were found nearly nine metres (30 feet) below the ground, according to The Paper.

Firefighters on scene found the rescue operation extremely difficult and dangerous due to repeated collapses and the presence of high-voltage power cables and water pipes, according to reports.

Video footage shows a second collapse around the same spot sent a cascade of concrete into the pit while the rescuers were still inside it.

The pair, equipped with safety harnesses, managed to scramble to safety as the ground continued to cave in.

Officials still have not disclosed what caused the deadly sinkhole to suddenly appear.

Sinkholes typically occur when rainwater dissolves limestone or soft rock beneath the soil, creating cavernous spaces which may collapse when it could no longer support the weight above the ground.
