What makes a mother can make a decision to give up her baby in her womb despite being six-month pregnant?

A 23-year-old pregnant woman in Yichang City, Hubei Province, China, has painfully decided to give up her six-month-baby in her womb after finding her baby suffering from a rare syndrome called mermaid syndrome.

Like other mothers, periodically Ms. Wu went to the local health center to check her baby’s health. By the sixth month of pregnancy, she went to the doctor for ultrasound and was told that her baby suffering a rare mermaid syndrome.

According to the Daily Mirror, after Ms. Wu’s ultrasound, doctors said the fetus had “fish tail”. The baby also has lung problems and has no bladder. Doctors concluded that the fetus suffered from a malformation disorder called Mermaid’s Syndrome.

It is more painful that despite being able to survive until borned, most babies with this disease can only live within a few hours, which is the reason for the mother to make a painful decision that getting rid off her beloved baby in her belly so that the baby does not have to suffer any more pain.

According to reports, the mermaid syndrome is a rare condition of congenital malformations that causes the fetus to have two legs fused together like a fish tail and results in the baby being born look like a real life mermaid. This situation only occurs at the rate of 1 / 100,000th and the baby only can live from a few hours to several days due to complications related to the development and function of the kidneys.

There has been a case of a 10-year-old baby, Shiloh Pepin, in the United States, suffering from the mermaid syndrome could last her life until she was 10 years old. After that, she died of pneumonia. She underwent 150 surgeries and died in 2009.

With the pain Pepin had to undergo, Ms Wu’s decision to give up her baby is understandable.

The case of Pepin has overcome the expectation of doctors. When she was a newborn baby, doctors predicted her life would only count by the day, so it was a miracle that she’d lived to that time.

Pepin only has an incomplete kidney, no gut or genitals and the baby’s legs stick together from the hips down. With the pain Pepin had to undergo, Ms Wu’s decision to give up her baby is understandable.
